The weather forecast turned out to be spot on for once, and it was a wonderfully warm, sunny day. When Emily finished at work, she didn’t bother to call Jack but walked to the river instead. At Folly Bridge, she took the footpath along the pretty little stretch of the River Thames until she came to the Boathouse.
It was a while since she’d been there, and it brought back some wonderful memories of when she and Josie would visit Jack at work and spend all day lying in the sun. With a sigh, she wondered if she’d ever be able to go more than five minutes without a reminder that her boyfriend and her best friend used to be together.
The tables outside the cafe were mostly taken, and there were a few groups of people standing around eating ice creams. More people occupied the stretch of grass alongside the cafe. They basked in the warmth of the sun as Emily and Josie had so often done.
Inside the cafe, Emily squeezed past the queue of people and slipped behind the counter to where Jack was manning the till.
“Hey!” He gave her a quick peck and then reached into the freezer and pulled out Cornettos for the woman waiting in line. He took her money before focusing on Emily again.
“I’m guessing you can’t get away any time soon?” she asked.
“There’s another waitress coming in soon. I can leave when she arrives.”
“Great. I’ll hang around then.”
“Do you want anything? Coffee? Ice cream?”
“No, I’m fine thanks. I might have a wander along the river.” She began to move away as a middle-aged man impatiently shouted his order to Jack. “Come and find me when you’re done.”
He smiled ruefully and went back to serving customers.
Emily didn’t get very far in her walk along the river. Her favourite bench was surprisingly unoccupied so she took a seat. It was the bench she and Jack had been on when he’d asked her to move in with him. They’d only just got together and Emily had insisted they wait three months. At the time, he’d also said he was going to propose to her on that bench. She’d responded that he had to wait a year to propose.
The memory made her smile. It had been such a happy day, and she’d been so excited about her future with Jack. She still was, of course, but life wasn’t always perfectly romantic like that day had been. There were money problems and ex-girlfriends to complicate matters.
A goose pecked in the long grass by the leg of the bench and Emily stamped her foot in an attempt to shoo it away. It didn’t work. She turned her attention to the river in front of her. The slow-moving water glistened as the sunlight hit it. A few houseboats bobbed on the opposite bank. They were permanently moored there and were all very familiar to Emily. One in particular she loved – it was brightly coloured and adorned with hanging baskets and potted plants.
